Select Shop Kyo
Excellent facial oil-blotting paper which maiko love
Select Shop Kyo is located in the Hyatt Regency Kyoto near Sanjusangen-do Temple. Superb art crafts and gift items, mainly from Kyoto but also from all around Japan, are on display. Some are original items available only at this shop, so this is a must-visit site if you are nearby. One particularly popular and unique item is aburatori-gami, or facial oil-blotting paper, made by Hori Kinhakufun (1,750 yen for 20 sheets). Hori Kinhakufun started their business in Kyoto in 1711 as a gold leaf producer. The craftsman strikes a piece of gold with a wood hammer until it becomes an extremely thin sheet of gold foil. He always uses a piece of thin paper overlapping the gold so as not to damage the foil’s surface. It was later discovered that this soft and delicate paper used for gold foil making could be used as a facial oil-blotting paper for maiko (apprentice geiko), and the paper’s popularity boomed. In fact, the paper gently absorbs excess oil on the face and keeps the skin refreshed. The sheets come in a beautiful wooden box making it a stylish purchase for many people as a special gift for someone. Not only women but also men will appreciate receiving such a delicate and sophisticated item from Kyoto.
