Famous temple known for Shinsengumi keeps the guardian deity for children

Mibu-dera Temple was established in 991 and has the principal image of Buddha named Enmei Jizo Bosatsu. This temple is known as a place where Shinsengumi was founded.  There are graves of 11 Shinsengumi members including Kamo Serizawa.  On the 16th of July every year, the event of anniversary of the members’ death is held and a lot of devotees visit this temple from all over Japan. Visitors can obtain an amulet for children as this temple holds the guardian deity for children and the statue of “Yonaki Jizo” which is regarded for granting protection, preventing nighttime weeping and curing disease.

Recommended Mibu Kyogen traditional theatre play will be held at Dainenbutsu-do Hall in Setsu-bun Festival (early Feb.), spring and autumn. From 2014, the festival schedule will be changed to 7 days from Apr. 29th-May 5th.
