“Cherish the quality of a single tea leaf” – Kyoto’s representative tea leaf shop
Ippodo Chaho opened in 1717 as a shop offering tea leaves, tea utensils and ceramics. Their fist-class tea leaves soon gained widespread recognition and the imperial clan, Yamashina no Miya, praised them and said, “Cherish the quality of every single tea leaf.” The name of the shop, Ippodo, was decided upon by adopting Chinese characters based on this remark. There are a wide variety of Japanese green teas depending on the production areas and how they are processed. Ippodo mainly selects green tea leaves from Uji (south of Kyoto City) where the climate is especially favorable for their cultivation and conventional tea production and processing methods are still practiced. Every Ippodo staff member is extremely knowledgeable about tea and will happily recommend the best selection for each customer depending on their preferred taste and how and when the tea is enjoyed. One of Ippodo’s special teas is “Kaboku,” the finest quality Sen-cha green tea offering a rich aroma and refreshing sweetness with just a slight suggestion of bitterness. This tea is a must as a great gift choice for a special person who loves green tea. As an every-day drink, their Genmai-cha (roasted tea with rice) is highly recommended. There are also seasonal special teas like the new tea leaves of the year in May and Obuku-cha, an auspicious tea enjoyed during the New Year’s period.
