One of the best autumn leaf viewing sites in the Higashiyama area

The temple has attracted people from around Japan since the Heian period (794-1185) for the fascinating autumn view and it is even called “Eikan-do, the temple of maple leaves in autumn.”  In the temple precinct grow about 3000 maple trees that color the entire area with a deep red in autumn,  a truly breathtaking view.  This is the headquarters of the Nishiyama Zenrinji School of the Jodo sect of Buddhism.  Their main deity is Amida Nyorai, one of the six most important Amida statues in Kyoto.  The Amida is called “Looking Back Amida” as she looks as if she is looking back over her left shoulder.  The main hall is a typical architectural example from the Momoyama period (16th century) that was moved from Shitenno-ji Temple in 1607.山で、本尊は京都六阿弥陀のひとつである阿弥陀如来像。左肩越しに後ろを振り返ったような姿から「みかえり阿弥陀」と呼ばれます。桃山建築の本堂は1607年に四天王寺から移築したもの。
